2017 Dog Food Recall List

Recalled: Against the Grain Canned Dog Food

Maker: Against the Grain Pet Food
Cause: Potential for pentobarbital
Announcement: FDA report dated Feb. 14, 2017
What was recalled: Against the Grain Pulled Beef With Gravy Dinner for Dogs, 12 oz. cans, Lot #2415E01ATB12, UPC code ending in 80001, expiration date of Dec. 2019

The product was sold in Washington and Maryland. Oddly, it was manufactured and distributed in 2015, so this is a new recall for an older product. The FDA says it can’t even verify whether or not the product is still on any store shelves.

No other Against the Grain products are part of the recall. The company said in a statement on its website, “There have been ZERO reports of any illness to our company and the FDA, but this has been issued out of an overabundance of caution.”

According to the FDA, “Oral exposure to pentobarbital can cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, nausea nystagmus (eyes moving back and forth in a jerky manner), inability to stand and coma.” The agency said no complaints have ever been filed for this company since it was founded.

Five lots of a canned dog food made by Evanger’s were recalled earlier this month for the same reason — there was a chance that the food contained pentobarbital, often used as a euthanasia drug. We wrote an article discussing how that could possibly happen, as well as a timeline of events leading up to that recall. Against the Grain is manufactured at the Evanger’s pet food plant.
