If our dogs and cats are to achieve the long life and health they deserve, they should eat the food that evolution designed them to eat. The heartiness of our pets has allowed us to abuse them where their nutrition is concerned. The convenience of walking into your local grocery store and picking up a bag of highly processed kibble laced with chemicals and preservatives, as well as the marketing campaigns of the pet industry, has led to believe that this is the proper diet for our pets. However, many pets don’t tolerate modern processed pet food well and their health and wellbeing will benefit significantly from a diet change back to the way nature intended. The result of a healthy raw diet can be a reduction in many common health problems such as obesity, arthritis, allergies, autoimmune disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal conditions, kidney disease and so many more.

One of the first benefits which is usually noticed in pets fed a raw diet is healthier skin and a shiny coat. Many pets will have more energy and be more eager to play and interact. Pet owners will also certainly appreciate other benefits which come with following the evolutionary nutrition principles such as improved doggy (or kitty) breath through healthier teeth and gut and a reduced stool volume and odor!

Biologically Appropriate Raw Food
(BARF) Model

This diet is all about feeding dogs properly and returning them to their evolutionary diet. A Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet for a dog is one consisting of raw whole foods similar to those eaten by the dogs’ wild ancestors (the Gray Wolf). The food must contain such things as muscle meat, bone, fat, organ meats, vegetable and fruit materials combined in precisely the correct balance just as Mother Nature intended because these are all of the ingredients that a wolf consumes in the wild while consuming its prey.

What does a BARF diet consist of?  Typically it will have the following ingredients:

• Muscle Meat
• Raw meaty bones
• Organs & Offal (with half of this amount being liver)
• Fruits & vegetables
• Sometimes dairy
• Supplements
